differences

We're talking about differences. How far can you go to highlight this? Of course it gets complicated when you go further to discriminations. In a personal level, every action has a lot of significance, even those that merely hint at it. In comparison with others?
But how, really, do you draw the comparison? Personal against the masses? The personal always represents the mass, doesn't it?

For Spivak...

"Many people want to claim subalternity. They are the least interesting and the most dangerous. I mean, just by being a discriminated-against minority on the university campus, they don't need the word 'subaltern'. . . They should see what the mechanics of the discrimination are. They're within the hegemonic discourse wanting a piece of the pie and not being allowed, so let them speak, use the hegemonic discourse. They should not call themselves subaltern."

Even individuals within the 'hegemonic discourse' stand a chance of being discriminated against. Where do they stand? And if being a subaltern means having a piece of the pie: does it mean that your voice has better chances of being heard with the tag attached?

Anyway..just watched an interview with Alice Walker on the BBC. Can't help but being, again,a little indulgent.

(to children suffering from landmines)

"I have been wounded just as you’ve been wounded, and this is not the end of the world.
...You can have a wonderful life."

Beautiful. That does take a lot of gut to say...you can't realy be wary of criticism.

Really, now...good night.
