I think people can be civil to you, agree to be your friends – if you want to call it so – because they don’t think much of you. The ones that do, that respect you in a way, will stay away, probably hating you, because you earn their respect.
The friendly ones don’t see you as a threat; the moment they do, they’ll stay away too.
